Experience the ultimate day tour with One Day On Maria. Enjoy your morning exploring Maria’s dramatic coastline and enthralling wildlife. Explore seal colonies, sea caves, spring fed waterfalls, sweeping sandy beaches, towering mountain ranges and the world famous Fossil and Painted Cliffs.
Tour 1. ISLAND OF SEALS - After starting your cruise sweeping underneath the magnificent limestone cliffs of Fossil Bay, your cruise will turn 90 degrees and head North towards Freycinet. Your destination? THE ILE DES PHOQUES (pronounced "focks"). The Ile Des Phoques (French for Island of Seals) is an absolute haven for marine life and has been declared one of the best cold water dives in the world. On the way to the island, you will see Albatross, Dolphins, Australian Fur Seals and Whales (depending on the time of year) as well as a majestic panoramic view of Maria Island and the Freycinet Peninsula. Once arrived at the Ile Des Phoques, we stop the boat and you sit with the seals whilst you enjoy lunch. This is a remarkable experience in itself. To enjoy a gourmet Tasmanian lunch whilst seals play about the boat is a dream for most (including us). Before lunch, you may even like to take the rare opportunity to SWIM or SNORKEL with the seals around the boat. That's right! We provide mask and snorkels to those who would like to come face to face with one of the World's most majestic marine mammals. If this was not enough, the cruise then takes you exploring Ile Des Phoques hidden secrets - the largest granite sea caves in Tasmania (possible the Southern Hemisphere) to claim that "once in a lifetime" photo. Our cruises take the time for you to enjoy your surroundings. We spend an hour at lunch with the seals and up to 15 minutes in each sea cave. After a relaxing 1.5 hours at Ile Des Phoques, the cruise returns you to Darlington via the Painted Cliffs for the most sought after of all souvenir photos. Cruise takes approximately 3 hours.
Tour 2. CIRCUMNAVIGATION - You asked for it and now the Circumnavigation has become the second cruise option for Maria Island. After exploring the Fossil Cliffs and limestone sea caves of Fossil Bay, your cruise continues South down the East Coast of Maria Island to explore this remarkable hidden coastline (accessible only by boat). Visit mountain fed waterfalls, secluded bays, sea caves and blow holes. Your cruise will take you to Riedle Bay for lunch at the Eastern side of McRaes Isthmus. This stunning beach is identical to the World famous Wineglass Bay and is visited only by a handfull of people each year. Whilst at anchor you may also swim and snorkel about the boat in this idylic and pristine location. The cruise then continues South to the very remote southern tip of Maria Island to explore even more remote coastline and sheltered bays. Sweeping underneath the southern tip, called Cape Peron, the cruise returns to Darlington via the beaches of the western shore of Maria Island and the famous Painted Cliffs. Cruise takes approximately 4 hours.
Your lunch will be on board the boat at either the Ile Des Phoques or Riedle Bay depending the cruise you have selected. Lunch is buffet style and includes Tasmanian smoked salmon, ham, chicken, freshley prepared salad, Tasmanian soft and hard cheeses, dips, crackers, wraps and rolls. We will also provide a complimentry drink of Tasmanian sparkling wine or beer, as well as tea, coffee, juice and water.
In the afternoon, your tour will dock at the World Heritage Darlington convict settlement. The perfect way to compliment your cruise is to stretch your legs and wander Maria Island's Darlington settlement. Here you will enjoy a guided tour through Darlington’s fascinating collection of preserved convict buildings and historic artefacts, learn about darlington's remarkable history and come up close to Darlington's resident wombats and kangaroos.
When you ring to book your CRUISE & WALK day tour with us, please inform us which cruise you would like to participate in. We currently operate only a single vessel for the cruises, so the first to book will lock in the cruise for that particular day.
The ability to cruise North to the Ile Des Phoques and Circumnavigate Maria Island is also dependent on good weather. We will endeavour to inform you up to 1 week before your cruise departs with any concerns of weather or changes to your cruise. Full refunds are provided for cancellations due to weather. Whilst it is rare to cancel, it is never our intention to take you for over 3 hours on the boat if the weather is not good.
